In a major blow to the BJP ahead of the Municipal Council elections, Gurmeet Singh, a two-time councillor and former district president of the party in Barnala, has joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), along with several key leaders. The defection includes BJP state executive member Harinder Singh Sidhu and district leaders Charanpreet Singh and Buta Singh.

The new members were welcomed into AAP by Punjab State President Aman Arora at a formal event in Chandigarh. Arora praised the leaders’ decision, claiming it highlights the growing public trust in AAP and its governance. He stated, “In Punjab’s cities, AAP is now the first choice. People are satisfied with our work and want AAP to lead municipal administrations.”

This shift marks a significant step in AAP’s rise as a dominant force in Punjab’s urban areas, signaling a decline in BJP’s influence ahead of the elections.
