Honour Dr. Manmohan Singh with Memorial at Raj Ghat : Navjot Singh Sidhu Urges President

December 29, 2024 08:49 PM

New Delhi: Former Punjab Minister and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu has written to the President of India, urging the establishment of a memorial for former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh at Raj Ghat. Sidhu’s letter has reignited a national debate about the treatment of India’s democratic icons and whether politics is overshadowing traditions that honor their legacies.

Sidhu’s appeal comes amid speculation that Dr. Singh’s cremation and subsequent memorial might be planned at Nigambodh Ghat, a site often used for public cremations in Delhi, instead of Raj Ghat, the final resting place of many national leaders. Sidhu has called this move “an affront to the towering legacy of Dr. Singh” and warned that it would set a dangerous precedent for how future leaders are honored.

The Argument for a Raj Ghat Memorial

Navjot Singh Sidhu stressed that Raj Ghat is more than a cremation ground—it is a symbol of India’s respect for its most revered leaders. He pointed out that former Prime Ministers such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee have been memorialized at the site, making it the natural choice for Dr. Singh’s final tribute.

“Dr. Singh’s contributions as an architect of India’s economic reforms and his leadership as Prime Minister demand the same honor that has been given to his predecessors. To deny him this would be a grave injustice and a break from tradition,” Sidhu wrote in his letter.

Political Leaders React Across Party Lines

The controversy has drawn reactions from across the political spectrum, with leaders both supporting and opposing Sidhu’s demands:

Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress President:

“Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy is not just about his tenure as Prime Minister but his contribution to reshaping India’s economy and governance. He deserves to be remembered at Raj Ghat, where the country honors its greatest leaders. Anything less would be disrespectful.”

Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP:

“Dr. Manmohan Singh’s humility and service to the nation should inspire generations. Denying him a memorial at Raj Ghat reflects pettiness and political bias. We stand firmly with Sidhu ji’s demand.”

Derek O’Brien, TMC Leader:

“This is about respecting democratic values and traditions. Dr. Singh was a statesman and a man of integrity. The decision on his memorial should reflect the dignity he brought to public life.”

Subramanian Swamy, BJP Leader:

“Dr. Manmohan Singh’s economic reforms cannot be ignored. While political differences exist, leaders must be judged by their contributions to the nation. I see no reason why he should not be memorialized at Raj Ghat.”

Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi CM and AAP Chief:

“Dr. Manmohan Singh’s simplicity and dedication set him apart. Political considerations should not dictate how we honor such a leader. The people of Delhi and the nation want a dignified tribute at Raj Ghat.”

However, some BJP leaders have indirectly defended the government’s silence on the matter, arguing that such decisions must account for logistical and administrative considerations.

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s Legacy

Dr. Singh served as India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, leading the country through a decade of economic growth and global prominence. Known as the architect of India’s liberalization policies in the 1990s, he laid the foundation for the nation’s transformation into an emerging economic power.

Despite his accomplishments, Dr. Singh’s political career was often characterized by his quiet demeanor and understated leadership, which sometimes overshadowed his achievements. Sidhu and others argue that this should make honoring him all the more important.

Public and Expert Views

The debate has resonated widely, with many citizens and experts expressing support for Sidhu’s demand.

Public Sentiment: Social media has seen hashtags like #HonorManmohanSingh and #RajGhatForManmohan trending, with thousands demanding a memorial at Raj Ghat.

Experts’ Take: Political analysts and historians have emphasized that Raj Ghat’s tradition is integral to India’s democratic fabric. “Excluding Dr. Singh would send the wrong message about how India values its leaders, regardless of political affiliation,” said historian Mridula Mukherjee.

Awaiting Government Response

The central government has yet to issue an official statement on the matter. While some see this silence as indicative of political motives, others argue that a decision of this magnitude requires careful deliberation.

Sidhu’s letter to the President concludes with an emotional appeal: “History will remember us for how we honor those who served selflessly. Let us rise above politics and give Dr. Singh the dignity he rightfully deserves.”

Conclusion

The question of Dr. Manmohan Singh’s memorial has now become a litmus test for India’s commitment to democratic traditions and impartial recognition of its leaders. As the nation watches, the government’s decision will reflect not just on Dr. Singh’s legacy but also on the values that define modern India.
