Chennai: A devastating train accident occurred in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district on Saturday, resulting in 12 coaches derailing and 19 people injured. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported. The Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express, carrying over 1,300 passengers, was traveling at 75 km/h when it rammed into a stationary goods train.
According to RN Singh, General Manager of Southern Railways, a "mismatch between signal and route" caused the tragic incident. The passenger train was supposed to switch to the main line but was inadvertently diverted to a closed section of the track where the goods train was parked.
Accident Sequence
1. The Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express stopped at Kavaraippettai Railway Station in Tiruvallur.
2. A goods train, also headed to Gudur, was on the loop line.
3. Despite signal clearance for the main line, the passenger train entered the loop line.
4. The train hit the goods train from behind, causing engine derailment.
Investigation Underway
The Railway Safety Commissioner will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the exact reasons behind the accident. Officials reported a "heavy jerk" before entering the loop line, indicating potential signaling issues.
Response and Relief Efforts
- Injured passengers are receiving treatment at state-run hospitals.
- Stranded passengers were transported via buses to Chennai and accommodated on a special train to their destinations.
- The derailment occurred approximately 40 km from Chennai.
Statement from RN Singh, General Manager, Southern Railways
"It is too early to say exactly what happened. The signal had been set for the main line, while the track switched the train to the closed loop. We will investigate and take necessary actions."
Railway Protocol Under Scrutiny
The incident raises concerns about railway signaling and route management protocols. Ensuring safe and efficient rail operations is crucial, especially considering India's vast rail network.
