The prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne said his country will hold a referendum on whether to become a republic and remove newly formed King Charles III as the head of state within the next three years as a final step to becoming a truly sovereign nation.

Last year, Barbados declared itself a republic by removing the British monarch as head of state. Mauritius did it in 1992.
